Where Am I Going???

3.03.2011

I've been in a bit of a funk. I've had a few people tell me things that have knocked my confidence. I've had my loyalty, abilities, intelligence, and talent questioned and I must say, I'm a little down. I won't get into each instance of emotional ass kicking in this post but I promise to explore each painful blow in future entries. For now I'm going to focus on healing.

A lot of people have "go-to's" when they are feeling down. For some it's ice cream, booze, or shopping, and I've tried them all at some point, but when things get really crap-tastic I go to my happy place and read one of my favorite books, "Oh The Place's You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss.

I love this book with all my heart, and since yesterday was the Dr.'s birthday, it seemed like the perfect way to end a less than fabulous day. I was 12 when this book came out and I enjoyed it, as an adult I identify with it and appreciate it. This excerpt spoke to me:

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't
Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.

And when you're in a Slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

I'm slumping folks, trying to un-slump, and while I'm not totally slump-free, reading this book helped.

Now I'm well aware that reading children's books for comfort could give credibility to my critics, who claim I'm not "smart enough" but at this point I don't care. I can't worry about people who don't believe in me. I'm done, I have to focus on un-slumping and finding my way.

You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

So here I go, I'm on my way. I am going on with my life and attempting to let go of any and all self doubt and insecurity. I know I'm destined to meet all kinds of people and see all types of places, and while I'm grateful to anyone who wants to explore these wonderful locations with me, I refuse to travel with naysayers and negative types.

Safe travels my friends,
dj

Me, Simply said...

I know what its like to have your confidence shaken. At times like these, I try to focus on the positive and leave the haters behind. I have to say that i really enjoy your blog. It makes me smile. I have recently started to find my voice and made the choice to start one. I'm sure I will have haters, but something about putting myself out there makes me feel... well... like I exist.

I love that book, too, Deidre -- But I didn't know it was for kids!
